Kielder Observatory

It looks like a wooden jetty – seemingly incongruous in its landlocked hillside setting – and that is not all that sets the Kielder Observatory apart from other star-gazing facilities.

Kielder, in the far north-east of England, is home to the country’s largest managed forest and Europe’s biggest man-made lake, but it was the purity of the light (the best in England) that was the major attraction for the planners of this project.

Wood is about to start beating at the door of a traditional cement and steel stronghold – the multi-storey building. And the irony is that the core technology on which this exciting new development is based comes from the concrete industry.

Researchers at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand have recently designed and constructed the world's first large-scale pre-stressed timber test building – with internationally significant results.
